Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Thanksgiving Travel or Not

We are having the strangest weather............75 DEGREES. The other night it was 26. Most of my tender flowers froze. And now it is back up into the 70's. And I thought the weather in Louisiana was unpredictable......hah.

Thanksgiving is almost upon us, and I am supposed to go to Texas for the baby's christening on the 24th. I haven't worked out the details, do I go the whole week, or do I leave right after Thanksgiving and just spend a few days. Decisions, decisions. The problem isn't so much the being gone, it is the trip. I have not been feeling well enough to spend time on a plane. And I certainly don't feel like driving. It is at best a 16 hour drive.

Much to think about. AND Nick has another Science project. It seems that unless I am here to hammer at him, DO YOUR HOMEWORK, seldom does it get done on time. He is a very bright child, but unless he does his homework him grades do not reflect his intelligence. It only reflects he is a bit lazy. Makes it hard for a parent to evaluate her child's learning curve. So there is more to consider than just taking a trip.

And then there is the cat, unless I stay home to protect him, all the cats in the neighborhood comes onto my back porch and beats him up. They literally knocked the poop out of him last time and ripped his ear. I had to board up the kitty door. This wasn't an issue until two years ago when the lady across the street moved in with her three cats, none of them fixed, and then just turned them loose to breed. One of the females has had a batch of kittens just as fast as nature will allow, and now the street is overrun with feral cats. All of which have found that they can get inside my house using the kitty door. I have sat in my chair watching TV and observed one of those cats cross right in front of my face heading for the food dish. They have become quite bold.

I am talking myself into staying home, I think......

Beans, Beans, Beans

My family has discovered that they love beans. We have a restaurant here, called "The Fruit Jar Cafe" and they have a bean bar. I was not familiar with a bean bar, so it was something new to me. It is basically the same as a salad bar, you purchase your dinner, and with it comes beans. They have bowls at the bar and you can have as many different kinds of beans as you can eat. We got up close and personal with butter beans. They are the same a large white lima's, but here in the south they are called butter beans. So yesterday I purchased a two pound bag and that is what I am making for dinner tonight. I also purchased what they call "fat back" and salt pork, to put in them. I opened it and smelled it, and decided to use salt pork instead. Fat back is just what it says, fat. Nothing else, no meat of any kind. I have to tell you, here in the south, people are heavy, and I think I know why!

Wee Hours of the Morning

It is going on 4am, long past time to go to bed, but I have been writing, reading and doing stuff, and the time just slipped away. The wonderful part about being retired, you can sleep whenever you want. Even though I still have two kids in school, I can go back to bed once they have left. Well tomorrow is Saturday, and everyone will sleep in tomorrow, even the cat. Time for bed.
