Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Snow in the Sierra Mountains

One of Akela's comments reminded me of snow and about the snowy winter days of my childhood. My Mom never cared for snow, she had to walk to work in the winter because it got so deep she couldn't get the car off the street where we lived. The snowplows only worked the major streets and we lived on a road off the beaten path on the "other side of the tracks." So during winter our car sat in the front drive, just a little mound of snow sitting out there, you really couldn't tell that it was a car at all. And we had to walk to work and to school respectively. My brother was two years older than I, and he would take me by the hand and drag me to school. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy going, I just didn't enjoy getting there, I much preferred to just play in the snow. Before I turned six we lived on North Hill, the part of town that got the most snow, and also the part of town that was the steepest. Our house backed up to a long driveway, and we used to sled down the driveway during the winter. We moved to Elm street when I was six, and although we still got our share of snow, at least it was easier walking to school because school was closer and it was level ground. I don't think we ever had a winter without snow and some winters it got to six or seven feet deep.

I actually enjoyed snow, but I was a child and looking at it from a child's point of view. It was great sport.

When I was a kid snow and winter were my favorite time of year. Now I can do without the snow and ice.

Hi Elween, everyone should have the fun of playing in the snow once in their life at least. If you bundle up nice, and it is a nice day, playing in the snow is great fun......we used to sled down the hill, build snowmen, make snow angels, and grandma would make snow ice cream. I love the taste and feel of nice clean snow. We used to eat it off of our mittens........

I have been posting pictures to flickr for years, I pay for the privilege, I don't just use the free account, so that I don't have to worry about how many I post. So there are lots of pictures there, and they are only a small amount of the many pictures that I have taken over the years. I am always afraid of losing them if my computer should crash. I moved many to disc, only to find out later that they weren't actualy on the disc, I made somekind of mistake and didn't notice, so I have to do it all again someday.

HI Dr. John, I don't know if my Mom every liked snow, but I have a feeling that as a person gets older, and we have more joint aches and pains, the cold really isn't our friend. haha

I didn't mind snow until I was about 13 Nea, that's when I bu...red my knee up and I was terrified of falling after that, so of course walking in snow became my pet hate. I love to look at it though. :)

I love reading your memories. x

Hi Akela, OUCH, well I certainly understand, I don't think a winter went by that we didn't fall right out in front of our house. Maybe that is what my Mom disliked about it most, because she also had a bad knee from a bicycle accident when she was young. And grandma just stayed inside because she was scared to death of falling. but it is lovely to watch coming down from the warmth of your home. :)

HI Pete, I am doing well, we got back from Texas, and it turned off cold and wet. both of which I was ready for. It was really hot in Texas.

I won't have to water anymore, hopefully. And it is a good thing because we have a water ban on here in Georgia. Means I am not supposed to water anything out of doors. But you know me, I am not going to let my flowers dry up, so I am glad we had two days of rain, so now I don't have to be a criminal. haha
