Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Ana's Concert

The kids are here and everyone has gone to bed except for the ole man and myself. We are heating up a pot of beans, great late night snack, haha. It has really been wonderful having the kids here, we are having a lot of fun with our grandson, son and daughter - in - law. Tonight we went to Ana's Christmas Concert, she sang, "Ave Maria," it was beautiful. Of course we thought it was the best song of the evening. Then we all went to Taco Bell and had a quick snack and then on to Target so that I could buy my Grandson a little truck to ride through the house so that he can properly bump into all of the furniture. Tomorrow we are going down to Marietta on a couple of errands and the kids are going with us. Nick still has school until the end of the week, and Ana does also. But Ana is exempt from finals because she has all A's. So she doesn't have to go to school for the next two days. If you are finals exempt they don't even want you go be there. That is the one compensation that she gets for getting good grades.

We are not doing anything aside from being with and enjoying family, cooking, eating and talking. We have caught up on a full years worth of talking, and have covered many years of the kids childhood in trips down memory lane. Trevor doesn't mind my talking about him when he was small, and his wife wants to go through the family pictures. So I have to haul them out in the next couple of days and make sure that I give her pictures of Trevor when he was small. She has dropped a couple hints that she would really like to have some. And I have plenty. But that is for another day.

I took pictures at Ana's concert tonight, but I am pretty sure they didn't turn out. I have a zoom lens, but I am not able to hold the camera still enough to get good pictures at the distance that I was out there tonight, so they are blurry. I am going to get a new camera that has a stabilizer. I am tired of trying to get close up pictures from the back of the auditorium.

"Being with the family, cooking, eating and talking" - just perfect I would say (although I would have to include "drinking" amongst all those!

my digital camera has the same problem too. once i zoom in, the image became so blur. but if too far, can't see the person clearly. what to do, just have to bear with it before getting new camera when i work next time! hah ;)

Hi Queenie, I have five Grandson's now, but I am closer to two of them. Mainly because I have been around them more. Trevor makes a point of spending Holidays with us, we have had them here for the last three years. And I think it really helps keep us close. Kids drift away when they get really involved in work and play. I think having their own kids makes them realize how important family is....my eldest son is closer to his Dad than me, but that is another story. haha

Hi Akela, I love the pictures, but I get very sad when I look at them for some reason. I guess I hate growing old,

Hi Avus, I would love to be able to enjoy our family tradidtion drink, Boilo, but this year my stomach isn't up to it.......although I might just try a little, I sure miss it.

We are having a good time, and I have been well the last week......so I really have enjoyed this past week a lot.

Hi LIbby, I am grateful they could come, I would love to have them all here just once, but I guess that is asking too much. haha

Hi Elween, I just can never get close enough for quality pictures of concerts, so I suppose I shouldn't take them, but I keep trying. haha

What's "boilo" then, Nea? Am I missing out on something?

Neoma said...

Ah yes, Avus, if you have not tasted Boilo you are indeed missing out........

Recipe for Lithuanian Boilo, this is an old family recipe.

1 pt. whiskey
1/2 pt. water
1/2 tsp caraway seeds
1 lemon, cut in chuncks then squeezed, then put in pot both juice and rind
2 oranges, cut up in chuncks, and then squeezed, put in pot both juice and rind
1 cinnamon stick, broken in half
1/2 cup honey
butter to taste, 1 tblsp?

Put all ingredients except whiskey in a pot and bring to a boil, simmer for a few minutes and then add whiskey. If you want the drink strong, remove and serve right away, if you want to cook off some of the alcohol you can add all ingredients at once and bring to boil all together.

This makes a disgusting looking brew......but believe me, it really tastes really good, you pour the liquid out into tiny, tall liquor glasses.... using a strainer.

It comes out a golden amber color.....

PS. IT does not appear to be very strong, but believe me, two of these can knock your socks off.....I just love to try and cook after having two glasses.....haha

My wife says "yes! yes!" regarding the cooking whilst "on the sauce" (English expression for being on the drink).
I have instructions to print this recipe off so we can try it. (If we ever surface after it, i will let you know what we think of it!)

I hope you like it... :):) I have one glass as soon as the pot is ready, it is the most potent with alcohol, the second is the best, just the right blend, and the third is getting a bit cinnamoney......and rather "thick"......but good also......by then who cares I am feeling no pain, or tasting much of anything. haha

Nea, can't wait to hear that story.

Hi Queenie.....stories for after the holiday.. haha....and maybe then, just the short version.....No one really WANTS to hear about my troubled past. haha

Hello Q......so good to see you. We are having a good Holiday, I am beginning to tire out though, I have been working at a fast pace for a week now, and I am bone weary from cooking, cleaning, making plans, carrying them out, and preparing for more the next day. Feeding eight people for two weeks keeps me busy, everyone is always hungry, I do three loads of dishes a day and take out the garbage at least three times. Everyone is on vacation except me......as much fun as it is to have the family here with me for the holidays, the distribution of the work load is not even. haha I will need a vacation from the Holidays.....

Hope you have a nice day on Tuesday, and a good dinner. We are having a very traditional meal, it is the one they want and the one that I like to fix....so there ya go....making pies on Monday.....

I do all of my cooking from scratch, which means a lot of pealing, sifting, stirring, and baking......
