Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Music Lessons

Nick is learning to play woodwind instruments, namely the Clarinet, but I have been told switching over to saxophone is no big deal. He is also taking guitar lessons, and for a kid who never practices all that much, he is doing quite well. Today his music teacher asked me to make him practice at least 2 hours a week. He told me that he can't believe how well Nick is doing considering he never practices. He said that if Nick were to practice he would be awesome. Nick said he doesn't want to be awesome, he is quite happy just being average. I sure do wish that he were just the tiniest bit competitive. Ana seems to have inherited all of the competitiveness that this family had to offer.

Well, I am going to try to make him practice. My only leverage is telling him how much I hearing him play. Which is no lie. I do love hearing him play. I am going to get a piano, or at the very least move the piano that I have in Effie to here in Georgia. That way he and I can play together. Well I still need to work on the basement, work on taxes, and a hundred other things.

over and out....

How I wish I was musically talented. All this love for music and nothing to show for it - I blame Mom for pasing the "I can't sing a tune" gene to me...

My mother made me practice an hour every day and I never got up to average.

Our eldest son is called Nick too. :)

Our youngest son is musical - I think inherited from his great-grandfather who could play anything he put his mind to.

I can't play a single tune if my life depended on it, LOL! It definately lies hidden in the genes, both my parents weren't musical either, Aaah geez!
Let's hope that Nick will become a great musician in time to come!!

What a lovely surprise to find your comment on my blog Nea, goodness me, I have clicked into your blog about 1000 times, only to find it "Our of order!"

Hello, Aizan, welcome to my blog.

I know what you mean, all my life I heard my Mom say, I can't carry a tune in a rain bucket. which I guess means you can't carry a tune......but my brother and I sang anyway. haha Not good, but we sang. Now my daughter is singing and has a wonderful voice, my son who doesn't want to sing, loves to play music.....but doesn't want to practice, he just loves doing the concerts.... I guess it is an attention thing.

Hi Dr. John, you sound like my eldest son, I gave him lessons for two years and one day the music teacher told me I was wasting my money. So we gave up on him. To this day, he just can't carry a tune. Hopefully you did better than that......haha

I Akela, you have a Nick also. :):) I like that name, I called him Nicki for years, then one days he said, Mom, time to switch to Nick. so Nick it is..

I think musical talent is basically inherited, don't you?

HI gince, so good to see you here,I came over and visited today, loved your post.....but then I always love all of your posts.....

I used to play the piano, got okay, but not great, Ana's plays piano, and Nick is taking both acoustic guitar and woodwind.....he does well......but could do better. But then I guess a person can always do better at anything. haha

My old blog, well I made the mistake of closing that blog, thought I could reopen it at any time, WRONG. The minute I closed it, it was taken over by spam and adds. So I started a new one.

LOL we called our son Nicky until he insisted on Nick too! His Granny still calls him Nicky - he smiles indulgently!

Musical talent is definitely inherited - it missed me! :(

It would be wonderful if we could play or sing without the practicing.

Hi Akela, Nick still lets me call him Nicki, it is habit, one I have a hard time breaking. But he is my baby and always will be, so I might always call him Nicki. haha

I had a grandfather that played the violin, an uncle that played guitar, and grandma and mom played the piano. I play the piano as does Ana and Nick went to the wind instruments, because they are easier to carry with you than a piano. haha. But I still would not say that music talent runs in our family. We just want to have music so bad, we ignore that we aren't all that good. The kids are better than me at playing music. I am better at playing the radio. haha

HI Betty, I play wonderfully in my dreams without practice. Guess that is why I love dreaming. It is so fullfilling. haha
