Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Nick Turns 13

On this date, 13 years ago, Nick was born. I was in my 40's and knew it would be my last baby, so I spoiled him rotten. I don't think I sat him down to walk for himself until he was about three. Needless to say, we are very close. He is now a teenager and many changes will happen over the next few years. One of which, he will detach from his Mom, cut the apron strings, so to speak. It is the way of nature, it is the order of things. But never-the-less it will be hard on me. He was always eager to please, always there with a hug and a kiss, and always kind and generous. Hopefully those things will continue on, but as we all know, the teen years are the ones where the focus shifts from family to self. It is inevitable, if it didn't happen, a child would soon be lost in the world of other teens who have carved out their place, fulfilling their ego and their self esteem. I doubt if a teenager would survive in school, in this day and age, if they did not become a bit self centered. It goes back to the root of the adage, "If you don't take care of yourself, who is going to?" I will enjoy the man he will become, but I will always miss that "little boy."

Bitter-sweet. Perhaps his teen years will go fast and the man will be tender and loving, like the little boy.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NICK and may you have many more.

That's a lovely slide show Nea. 13 is a big turning point in a boys life. Did I tell you my eldest is called Nick too! :)

hi Quilly, he is still pretty much a little boy, but I see the change a coming..... his Dad still tries to tease him like he did when he was small, and he gives that look, "I am not five, Dad!" It is easy to forget just how old they are.....especially when you are as old as we are, haha. The teachers always want to know if we are his grandparents. We have long since quit being offended, haha.

It is bittersweet.......it makes me a bit sad and at the same time you want them to grow up......I guess the answer is, GRANDCHILDREN. But mine live to far away....

Hi Akela, I had to come to your blog to find out where to go to make the slide show, I remembered you made one for your Grandson a bit ago. I should keep a link I guess.

Yes, you did tell me that your oldest was named Nick, but a person has to tell me something seven times for me to remember, so it was good you told me again, because I had forgotton. Is your son's name also Nicholas, and you call him Nick or is his name, Nick? We hardly ever call Nicholas by his full name, but the teachers always want to, and he really doesn't like it. I guess a person should name a child the name they are really going to call them. But since our last name is Lithuanian/Russian, Anastasia and Nicholas were good choices. And now we call them Ana and Nick.

Happy Birthday Nick!!! May you have many more happy, healthy years and stay as sweet as you are!
It's true what you say Nea, and I think all Mother's with Sons miss that "little boy!", but let's face it, no matter how old they grow, they will always remain "our little boy" Eventhough they won't hear of it, LOL!
Enjoy every minute of him while he's still so young, because they grow up way too fast!!

I hope he never gets to big for hugs.....he was always my most effectionate, and that I would truly miss. I probably would have had a dozen kids is nature had been on my side, well, and my husband, haha. Although I have to admit, having one at 19 was easier than 40.

HI Pete....they have to grow up I guess, but do they have to do it so darn fast.....haha. Man those last 13 years went by in a flash. It seems like yesterday he was born. They say time speeds up as we get older, and I believe it is true. xoxo

Happy Birthday Nick, enjoy your Teenage Years, they go faster than you think.

Hi bill,,,,,,,thank you, I konw he will, but you know it won't be the same.....he won't let me talk baby talk to him anymore, haha.

Oh I will get over it.....life is bound to get easier as they get older. I have always been a worrier, and I have worried more over Nick than all the other kids put together. It is hard to expain how you feel about "the baby." The other kids have always understood......they treat him the same as I do. Protective.

My son is Nicolas (without the h - spelt I believe the French way) but we only ever called him by his full title if he was in trouble! ;)

He was Nicky as a child then progressed to Nick - I've always loved the name.

A LOVELY SLIDE OF NICK!

to me, it's so heartache so see our children grow up so fast coz we can't possibly hold them in the hand and treat them like babies forever...
anyway, Nick is so blessed to have you as his mum.

Happy birthday Nick and always be your mum's baby k! hehe :)
