Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Leaving On Sunday

(The entire left side of the house was torn off and the roof is in a neighbor's tree)

I am trying to get things done up here so that I can leave on Sunday, I have a moving van coming on Friday to pick up what furniture isn't demolished. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my musical instruments weren't right under the rain. I don't think it would do a piano much good to get rained on. The roof is gone, on the whole left side of the house, so the beds will be ruined. I guess that I can not stay inside the house. I am going to take my tent and sleeping bag, and maybe sleep in the yard. Or the kitchen. I guess the roof is still on in the kitchen. But I am sure it is structurally unsafe.

My neighbor said that the National Guard came by this morning and said that my house was the worst hit and had the most devastation they had seen so far. I guess my house was directly in the line of the tornado. My neighbor had a tree tossed into their back door, and their dog pens are totally gone. They have no idea where they ended up. I guess my dog pen is twisted metal, and the roof is totally gone from the shed out back. The only thing still standing with a roof is the laundry shed, so I guess I can still wash clothes, if I had electricity, water and gas. I think all of the services have been turned off for safety.

I can't quite picture it in my mind, and don't really want to. I keep thinking I will wake up and it was all just a bad dream. Once I have moved out all the stuff that I want, I guess I will just walk away........turn everything off.....and desert the house. Once I stop mowing the lawn, no one will be able to get to it anymore anyway, and it will just be one of those old house carcasses you see out in a field and wonder, gee, what is the story there.........

It was a majestic old house, one of the earliest built in Avoyelles Parrish. It is pictured in books of record having been built by old Doc LaFargue before the turn of the century. It sat on a knoll overlooking a row of stately oaks with a curved driveway that ran in front of the house. It sits on five acres and I always thought it the loveliest spot in the world. The only two trees left standing that weren't twisted are the sycamore in the back yard and an old dead oak that we have wished would fall down. Oh Sure, it is still standing. haha

I'm so sorry Nea, How horrible.

Travel safe and try to find peace.

That old oak still standing would be my luck too. hahahaha

Yeh, my neighbor thought it was something also, she said, "you know the old dead oak, well it is one of the two trees that the tornado missed. I had a row of oaks, beautiful old trees. And pecans, 200 year old trees. Well I guess they are all gone now. It will look so different without trees. It was shady and beautiful.

I took my husband to the Dr. today and he said it was Sciatica. think that is how it is spelled, and he is on pain pills. I find it hard to leave here if he isn't well. I need to be gone for maybe a month or more. Don't know how long it will take to get everything done. But each day will be an agony looking at this houses broken remains, so I won't stay any longer than absolutely necessary.

Hi Bill, thank you. I am not sure how long it will take, but I have to have everything packed up to move by Friday of next week. I am going to leave here on sunday, and get boxes and paper and begin the arduous job of packing. However I am not sure what kind of mess I will find inside. They were not able to get in, it is locked up. I guess there is structure still standing, although the outside is torn off. I am sure I will spend a good part of my time wiping tears. I feel really sad.

Usually when I read about a storm I don't know anybody in that area. I feel like I know you and I feel really bad over your loss. I certainly will pray for your safe travel.

Hi Quilly, I leave tomorrow, but I will need to spend the night somewhere, because otherwise I will get in during the night, and I need to have some daylight or I won't be able to get anything done. There is no electricity now. Nor phone or gas. Everything will have to be turned off in the house. Luckily I am the only home on the power line, if someone reported it off and they turned it back on, the place would probably burn down. I am sure there are lose wires all over the place.

I will be doing this all on my own, so I won't even know where to begin, I guess boxes and newpaper and begin packing the things that I can salvage.

Hi Dr. John, thank you, only the family pictures and heirlooms I am praying are okay, the things that I have bought I don't care a bit about, they can all be replaced. No life was lost, and although I hated like everything to lose my home, I guess it could always be worse. Hopefully the next few storms that are coming in our way, won't get our house here in Georgia. Now That would be a bit to much.....

Really beautiful picture,
seems almost a sin
for nature to tear into
such an idyllic home.
