Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Tornado Watch

Wind and blowing things across the porch, the yard, through the trees, and with it a lot of rain. That was our forecast today, along with a tornado watch in effect until 9:00 this evening. And today is the day my daughter chose to give a birthday party for her friend Austin. Everyone arrived at one time, and all came during the worst of the storm. One of the girls brought a bottle of sparkling cider and in ended up on the driveway, broken into many pieces. I just now got finished cleaning up the mess. The boys arrived all in one car, four of them, and the girls came one at a time. But they all arrived within minutes of one another. So now the house is full of kids and the smell of pizza. I just heard them singing happy birthday to Austin so the party will now be in full swing. Ana also turns 18 this month but she didn't tell anyone. She is like that, she is a very private person and doesn't like for anyone to make a fuss over her. But she loves making a fuss over other people, thus the Birthday Party.

I get stressed easily, so having a whole house full of teenagers will be a bit nerve wracking, but I can handle it. Turning 18 only comes once. Truthfully, this is the first time I have met some of Ana's friends. I can say one thing, I know for a fact, that these are kids who neither drink or do drugs. One thing I know for sure, if they are Ana's friends, they don't even smoke.

Hey Nea

I hope the Birthday went well and you were spared any Tornado's that may wanted to visit.

I am like your Ana, I'd rather do for someone else than have them make a fuss over me.

Take Care Nea

Bill

I hope the tornadoes have missed you and you are sleeping peacefully by now -- oh wait, it is time for you to be up again (or almost). I am the one who should be sleeping peacefully now.

Hope Ana's party was a hit and you weren't left with too much clean up.

Hi Bill, I stayed up until almost 5am, and then just got up and it is 11:00. It is hard to sleep with a house full of teenagers playing games, singing and running up and down to go to the bathroom. My bathroom you have to go through my bedroom, so it is off limits to company.

It worked out good, everyone had a good time, everyone just had eggs for breakfast, and I guess most went back to sleep. haha

HI Quilly, the Tornado watch passed uneventfully. We have them often and I mostly ignore them. It did blow had enough to knock limbs off the neighbors dead tree.

The party was a success Ana says. Austin the birthday boy has already gone home, but all the rest are still here. I think still asleep.

Ah I remember the teenage parties - We used to join in!

Nice to hear it went well, and that the Tornado missed you mostly. x

Hi Akela, she hasn't had that many parties........she used to have sleepovers with only girls, but I think this is only her second party with both boys and girls, and I had to talk to each of the parents and assure them all would be okay. No drinking, no drugs, no bad influences, haha. If they KNEW Ana, they would not have worried.

Ana would not have tolerated my "joining in". I would have gotten the ole, "evil eye." Her Dad and I mostly embarrass her with out presence. Which we make sure we do on occasion just to remind her that she does have parents. A couple of the kids came up during the night from the basement to use the bathroom, and we had a discussion about cats......they were all very nice kids. But I have a feeling Ana's friends are NOT the popular kids in school. They are like Ana. Ana was never popular, she wasn't willing to do the things you have to do to BE popular. haha She is what is considered to be a nerd. Straight A's, very dedicated to school, never causes trouble, and has no interest in designer clothes or makeup. Not the cheerleader type at all. And proud of it, she is a rebel.

Twenty years from now when she goes back for her high school reunion, Ana's drive and uniqueness will have taken her places, while the majority of the popular kids in school will be struggling just to get by.

Hi Quilly, I think you are right. I think a child that has individuality is a good thing. Too many kids just follow the crowd. And it often leads them into problems that last them a lifetime. Ana and I were talking about that today. Kids who ruin their lives before their life has even begun. She and I talk a lot about things. I don't try and run over her, I let her talk and voice her opinion. We do not always agree on things, but usually we can see the others side. She is just reaching the age where she thinks I have a bit of brains. haha She has never been in doubt about her own intelligence, but she has wondered about her father and I, often. I told her, you are learning early some kids don't give their parents any credit until they are almost 30.

We're getting ready for tornado season, too.
I like the music you have going! I rarely have the sound on but have it going tonight. Nice!

So pleased that the tornado didn't do to much harm. Ana sounds a gem, she sparkles all on her own. We are lucky aren't we Nea, glad the party was a blast, pity about the cider, whats that they say "no point crying over spilt milk", well cider in this case.

Your lucky to have a daughter who desn't drink or smoke. I guess it's the result of good parenting.

Ana doesn't sound like a nerd to me - she sounds like a very beautiful, well adjusted, kind young woman - who you have every right to be proud of. xx

Hi Andrew, still windy, woke up this morning to some tremedous wind. Blowing leaves and dirt all over the place.

the music was kind of for me while I work. And thought other might enjoy it, if they don't you can easily turn it off. I know that some people don't care for music. But I rather enjoy it. My music is pretty scattered, I like all kinds except rap. You won't find any rap on my site. haha

HI Queenie, when the cider fell, I told the girl who brought it, "well I guess you weren't meant to be drinking that." haha

Ha- if you had all those kids, you had a tornado in your house, never mind the one that was supposed to be outside! Hope all went well, though I'm sure it did.

Hi Dr. John, I would like to take the credit, and maybe I have helped by setting a good example, however, knowing my daughter it is just her own convictions. I have five kids and none of them smoke, and only a couple will drink at all. We just never drank or smoked around them. I didn't even believe in giving kids soft drinks. So their teeth are in good shape also. haha

Hi Akela, don't get me wrong, I don't call Ana a Nerd, that is her own description of herself. I asked her, "why do you kids insist on labeling yourself?" And she said, "at school, they are going to call you something, I am proud to be a Nerd." She is a very wellrounded individual with many fine qualities. Which will do her well in future. But some make it hard to be a teenager in high school.

HI Cindy, you are right, the tornado inside was much more nerve wracking than the one outside. My biggest problem with 8 teenagers, is the amount of food they consume. They were always hungry, they ate dinner and then breakfast, and they all stayed through lunch so they were hungry again. I made bacon and eggs and cheese biscuits for everyone. and finally got them full. haha
