Last week, and this week also we have been under tornado watch. Last week on March 16th. we actually had one touch down here in Bartow County. The high school is about 3 miles from here, and they say it went right around the high school. The report said the tornado was 1/2 mile across and was on the ground for 16 miles and it came within a mile of us here "on the hill." I truly didn't know it came that close. I know that we had some extremely high winds, but nothing like the supposed 150 mph they felt in the tornado's path. Two people were killed. The one woman who died, her house was literally demolished. They showed pictures of it, and you really couldn't tell that a house had been standing there. The car was some 150 yards away and it was flattened like it had been crushed by one of those big metal car crushers. Her husband is in the hospital in critical condition. They were dog breeders, and over 30 dogs also died that day. I guess they had other outside animals, and people are looking for some of them. A photograph from her home turned up in a ladies yard 150 some miles away.
We really must be in awe at the power of wind!

My grandmother was in a South Dakota tornado as a teen. She said it took the wall off their kitchen, but let the rest of the house be. Right beside the missing wall was the table and chairs -- still neat and tidy.
She also said that was the wall with their wood cook stove. It was found several miles away in a neighbor's field. It appeared none the worse for wear, except, that intact, still green blades of wheat grass had been driven through the stove door!

Hi Quilly, truthfully I went on about my business as if nothing had happened, didn't know until the next day just how close it had come. I didn't even go to the basement. The winds were strong, and blowing stuff around, but didn't know that it was that close. I suppose the wind was about 60 or 70 here. We lost a few shingles off the neighbors roof, not ours. Nick's ceiling started leaking, think it blew in around one of the vents.
That is amazing about the wheat straw through the door or iron on the stove. But I believe it....
I truthfully don'tknow where you would be safe suring something like that. They say get in the bathtub, I don't think I would feel very safe in the bathtub...not after having seen those people's house......and car. Everything was totally FLAT.
Nea ~ I am so glad that you and your family are safe. The other night when it made the news here in Calgary about the Tornado in Atlanta I said a prayer for you as I know you are close to Atlanta (well closer than me).

Hi Bill, our tonadoe was actually worse than the one in Atlanta, they say five times worse, although don't know how they do the math on that figure. They say if the Bartow tornado had hit Atlanta they would still be digging out the bodies. All those tall buildings....
Thank you for your concern,:) but you know me, I didn't even know there was any danger until it was past. I just kept on doing what I always do, and ignored the sirens.....
