Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Travel Plans

I booked tickets for the kids to come to visit in May. They will be here for Ana's Graduation. No deals on airfare right now, I guess because gas prices are so high. The going rate here in Georgia right now is about $3.16. In California I hear it is about $3.50. And of course those prices are going to be reflected in the cost of plane fare. There are airports that are less expensive than John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, but the kids live so close to that airport, and so far away from the LAX, I take pity on them and get them tickets close to where they live. They always have a hard time finding someone to give them a ride in the middle of the night.

Anyway travel plans have been booked, tickets have been purchased, and so they will be here from the 16th of May until the 26th. We are all looking forward to their arrival. I don't get to see little Trevor all that often, and he is growing up so fast. He will be four this October.

Well back to the basement. I am working as fast as I can, considering the limitations that I have.....sore back, sore wrist, sore legs. Climbing up and down a ladder is work, anyway you look at it. I now have the ceilings textured and painted, I got the can lights up and now I am going to finish the closets, and get the doors on. It goes slowly, but if I keep going I should have the rooms livable by the time the kids get here.

You must be so looking forward to seeing them. Our little Kai is four today - they grow up so fast! I hope you're not doing too much Nea - it sounds such a lot of work for one person.

I am, really looking forward to their coming for a visit. It seems such a long time between visits. They are not in a position to go much. So there trips here are kind of a vacation for them, also.

It is a lot of work, for one person. I don't mind the papering and the painting, but the heavy work, like installing doors, well it is becoming more difficult each day. I once was very strong, like my Mom, but as I get older I don't feel as strong as I once was. I can still swing a pretty "mean" hammer though, haha.

I know how you feel. I see my grandsons about every six weeks but I still really look forward to their coming. They will be here for Easter.
I am not working on a room but we are putting plaster on a layout. well Betty is.

Hi Dr. John, you are building a whole new train layout since you moved? That must be quite a bit of work also, although like me, I am sure you can go at your own pace. If I get rushed, nothing gets done.

I wish I could see them every six weeks, but it just isn't possible. And I don't see us ever moving back to California. I wish they would move here, but I don't know. She has lots of family there. But I doubt they will ever be able to buy a home there, they are just too expensive.

There is a commercial on TV, that mentions Neenah. Everytime I see it I think of you. I think it talks about the snow and lodging. I can't remember which commercial it is, I think it is for a Hotel or Insurance.

I'm glad you'll get to enjoy all of your kids together. I know it's hard to get everybody in the same place at once without someone actually having to die to accomplish it [funeral].

Btw -- gas here in Hawaii is anywhere from $1.39 to $1.49 for the lowest grades.

Thanks for the birthday wishes for Kai. In answer to your question yes my kids and grandkids all live very close - I'm very lucky. Don't work too hard Nea and I hope the family visit is everything you are hoping for. xx

Nea ~ you will enjoy your visit with your family, is is always special to have a visit especially if there is a far distance between. You sound really busy with getting your basement ready, you will have to post some pictures when you are finished.

I hope you are not getting the bad storms that you are forecast to have. I hate wind the most. I can live with the thunder and lightning but it is the wind that scares me.

Your Purdy is quite the handsome fellow. I like a Tabby Cat the most. My Barney was a tabby, perfectly marked. You met Barney on the facebook group you created.

A Blessed Easter Weekend is wished for you and your Family Nea.

PS

Blogger is being a big pain, it is taking a long time to post comments.

Hi Quilly, I hope that they all get to come, so far just Trevor and his family I know for sure. but I have some last minute kids. haha

Is that correct.....one dollar and 39 cents for gas? Can it be? We haven't seen that for a very long time. They say it will be 4.00 soon. Can only hope they are wrong.

Hi Akela, I used to live very close to the kids, but didn't see them all that often. You know, they grow up and have things on their own plate. But we always were together for the Holidays, but we still are a lot of the time. So I guess I can't complain. It is nice having them close though, isn't it. :):)

HI Bill, we had some doozies of storms here lately. Talk about high winds, I think I saw the worst one last week, then come to find out it demolished houses not more than a mile away. I didn't know it was that bad.

I took a video of my progress in the basement, but couldn't get it to post, I guess it was just to big of a file. I will have to do a shorter one, I guess. It was no doubt to long anyway.

$3.50 per gallon, I presume, Nea? You should come over here to the UK, we are paying £1.05 per litre, which would convert to $9.45 per gallon in your currency. We now have the highest taxed gas in the world!

OH MY GOODNESS, how do people afford to drive? So many people here, live in one city, work in another....and pass someone who lives where they work, and drives to where the other one lives. I used to pass the same people everyday. And I often thought, why don't we switch jobs...haha

But that was back when gas was only $1.00 a gallon. We used to say, what will we do when it reaches 2.00 a gallon, and now they are talking 4.00. I have a friend who lives in Hawaii and she says they are paying, $1.30. I guess it isn't the gas that is so expensive, it is the TAX that each state imposes on that tas. Long ago I remember they had a roads fund for that tax, to fix roads, and then someone got the bright idea to put that money into the general fund. Now there is never enough money to fix the roads. I often wonder how much of that money is feathering the politicians pockets. I hate corruption. Well back to gas.....

do you ever wonder how much is actually the cost of gas, and how much is the tax? I don't really know. What do the tax that they charge there for gas, go towards? Or do you know.

Avus said...

Our tax on gas is about 60% on top of the gas value. The trouble is they then take the resulting figure and add another 17.5% VAT onto that! (A tax on tax).
As you say, the original idea was to tax vehicles to provide money for the roads, but that is long gone - it all goes into the pot to pay for our National Health Service, Social Security (both good causes, but the latter is much abused) and the pay and gold plated pensions of our vast bureaucracy.

HI Avus, I wondered if the Health Care was in there somewhere, I know that it has to be expensive. They want to do something like that here also, but they can't figure out how to pay for it. There only answer is tax the rich, the only problem is, they actually only tax the middle class, the rich have ways of getting around it. Our social security we pay for ourselves, and there would have been plenty, but they borrowed from it way back when, and now complain because the baby boomers are collecting. They forget we have been paying for the last 50 years. I am now collecting, and it really isn't that much. Not enough to live on unless you have retirement set aside. I think we have abuse in just about every government run program. Our welfare system is the worst. And of course as you say, every person who has ever held office is now drawing a life time pension from the government till they die. And secret service, nice "golden umbrella's".
