Off The Beaten Path

Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never ever the same.

Leroy

We stopped today and located the house where the people live who own the Llama. The Llama's name is Leroy, and he does love carrots, and bread, and apples, well actually any fruit. They said that people stop and feed him all the time, and that is why he hangs out near the fence. It did always seem to me that he was standing there in anticipation of something. Now I know what, FOOD!! Seems Llama like to eat, also. haha

Anyway, Nick and I each brought a carrot and Leroy knew exactly what to do with carrots. He snaps off bite sized pieces until he gets to the stub, and then he snatches that up also. You have to hold on tight or he grabs the whole carrot, and if it drops to the ground, he just ignores it. It appears he wants to be fed by hand. haha We had a good time, and he let me pet him. His fur? hair? is very soft around his neck. I didn't see any signs of spitting, he seemed to be very social. The man who owns him said that Llama's protect the cattle from dogs. I guess if dog goes in to bother the cattle, the Llama either chases them or kills them. hmmmmmm Wonder if my dog Lou wandered that way? Naw, that was way to far from home. Besides, Lou would have run away. The owner told me if we feed him an apple, please cut it up in pieces. I suppose an apple could easily choke him if it should get down his throat. I doubt I will be feeding him many apples at $1.99 a pound.

I drove around a corner of one of our country lanes t'other day and was confronted by 5 llamas trotting down it. They had escaped from a llama farm nearby and they certainly did not want to be captured! I can well imagine them going for a dog.

This Llama seems so docile, it is hard to imagine him going after a dog, but the owner said that he protects the cattle from dogs, so I guess it must be true. The cattle are afraid of the Llama also, the Llama is always standing by himself. I thought he was afraid of the cattle, but it is the other way around. I guess I have never seen a Llama in full attack mode. Don't want to either. The owner told me that the only time he spits is when he is unhappy. They tried to give him worm medicine, and I guess they got spit on. Something else I don't want to experience. If that should happen, he wouldn't be getting any more carrots. haha

I have never seen a Llama farm, but I guess they have them here also.

How lucky you are to live so close to a llama. Nothing in our neighborhood but rabbits and dogs. Not even a horse .

I am glad you found the owner and get to claim Leroy as your newest friend.
